Western
Heights Cemetery Association exists to protect the physical integrity of the
cemetery; preserve and restore grave markers and relics; conduct, facilitate
and share historical research; and model the modern use of cemeteries as parks
and public space to build and benefit communities.
The
Association maintains the grounds with a focus on sustainability and creating a
pleasing experience for visitors. Low-water, low-maintenance native plants
create bird and pollinator habitat, connect migratory pathways, and serve as an
educational resource to advance public knowledge and appreciation of ecological
issues. We protect and add trees to help mitigate the urban heat island effect.
We
offer and host art installations and performing arts that are respectful,
meaningful, and use sustainable practices.
The
Directors seek to use an active, long-range governance style of intensive
self-management and self-assessment to ensure the health, longevity, and
dynamism of the Association continues into the next century so it may continue
to protect and nurture the cemetery.
